Outsmarting your lawyer.

One of the most dangerous things that a client can do is try to outsmart their attorney.  The reasons why are fairly straightforward:

  1.  Even the most junior member of a law firm has probably got more knowledge about the law, and how the law works, than you will acquire from your Google search.
  2. By taking actions behind your lawyer’s back you may be setting a trap for yourself because your lawyer is not “in the know” about what you are doing and they are making moves while handling your case.
  3. You let your lawyer’s insurance carrier off the hook for your losses by ignoring your lawyer’s advice.

In a Bankruptcy context, going behind your lawyer may also result in you being accused of a Bankruptcy Crime.  The penalty can be a fine or imprisonment not more than 5 years, or both.  Listen to your lawyer, talk to your lawyer, keep your lawyer in the loop.
